A Visit to the Cinema Wellman DVD Vault
Hello and welcome to Cinema Wellman. I am your host David, and today we’re going to take a little field trip into the Cinema Wellman DVD Vault in the first of a little series we have planned.
Today we’re going to take a look at some “Combo Platter” DVDs that have been added to the collection over the years.
And we’re NOT going to delve into the Godzilla combo platters because that may be an episode in itself.
I have Godzilla 7 packs, and 6 packs, and 4 packs, and a bunch of 2 packs.
We’ll save those for another day.
Now these combo platter DVDs were put together for a reason; let’s combine a couple of good movies with a couple of trash movies and sell them in one pack on the cheap.
NOBODY is going to buy these individually, so let’s group them together and see if anybody bites.
I bit.
All the time.
Sometimes I bought these combo platters because I “needed” to see one of them, and it was the only way I could get access to that movie back in the days before streaming.
Every now and then, I happened to really like all of the films, and didn’t own any of them. That was a big win. Those were unicorn purchases.
Streaming has drastically decreased the number of DVDs I’ve bought recently. I still buy them now and then, but those purchases are few and far between.
That being said, I will definitely be adding Godzilla Minus One to my collection very soon.
We’re going to begin today with a couple of double features before a three pack and two four packs.
If you still own a DVD player and want any of today’s combo platters, just shoot me an email at cinemawellman@gmail.com and I will put it in the mail to you.
Just like Netflix used to do.
First up is a double feature from someone who needs no introduction mainly because he’s no longer invited anywhere.
I was pumped up when I had the chance to snap up Under Siege and Under Siege 2 in one pack.
This packaging is so lame. Both movies are on the same DVD, and there’s no writing on it whatsoever. It’s a totally blank DVD.
As far as action movies go, both of these are pretty entertaining.
Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Busey, and Eric Bogosian devour ALL the scenery in these two movies.
They sometimes border on comedy.
As does Seagal in real life.
Our next double feature is a combo platter of Vincent Price movies. Now Vincent also chewed up a lot of scenery in his day, but his movies are much better than anything Seagal was ever involved in.
I love the cover of this DVD because it boasts “TWO FILMS ON ONE DVD.”
Wow. Amazing technology.
At least this one has an image on the DVD.
The House on Haunted Hill is a good old school horror film, and Last Man on Earth is the film on which both The Omega Man and I Am Legend are based, and I actually think this is the best of the three.
Our three pack is a “3 PACK Suspense!” and features one great movie (The Killer Elite), one decent thriller (Betrayed) and a movie titled Blown Away that was NOT the Blown Away starring Nicole Eggert and BOTH Coreys (Haim and Feldman!).
That was a mess.
I doubt that movie made ANY combo platters.
Next is a “4 Movie Marathon: Classic War Collection” that I bought because I needed to see one of the four films it features.
I had already seen two of them and had no interest in the fourth.
To me, this purchase was a loss.
And the movie I needed to see wasn’t even that good, as I recall.
Our final combo platter today is my favorite because it’s all disaster movies.
That’s going to be an upcoming episode. We love disaster movies!
We have Twister, The Perfect Storm, Poseidon, and Outbreak.
I honestly think I bought this collection because for some reason, I wanted to own my own copy of Twister.
This is hilarious to me since I think Twister is now on somewhere 24 hours a day!
I tease my sister Vanessa about her watching it every time it’s on. If I notice it’s being shown, I’ll text her the tornado emoji.
They’re making another one!!!! I saw the trailer the other day.
It’s called Twisters.
Wow. How’d they come up with that title?
Well, that’s a wrap from here in the Cinema Wellman DVD Vault for the first in a series that will have you wondering why I bought a lot of these DVDs in the first place.
We hope you join us again next week as we open the doors to the “Friends of Cinema Wellman Hall of Fame” or whatever we decide to call it.
We always use the term “Friend of Cinema Wellman,” for our favorite cinematic people, so we thought we’d get a chance to talk about them in a little more depth as we induct them into our Hall of Fame.
We hope you return to see who’s in the Inaugural Class of the FOCWHOF.
Until then, take care.
